French President Emmanuel Macron ordered the preparation of a protection plan covering the country’s critical infrastructure and sensitive facilities in the defense and technology sectors against hybrid threats linked to Russia.
Macron received representatives of political parties at the Élysée Palace in Paris to discuss the Russia-Ukraine war, conflicts in the Middle East and France’s domestic issues. At a press conference after the meeting, Macron said Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez had discussed with prefects the previous day the need to increase vigilance and alert levels in response to hybrid attacks linked to Russia.
The scope of protection against hybrid threats will be expanded
Macron said hybrid threats targeting Europe and France were increasing and asked the government to draw up a plan that would protect not only critical infrastructure but also the most sensitive facilities in the defense industry and technology sectors.
Macron said the attacks could be carried out using drones and cyberoperations.
Energy security and the Strait of Hormuz
Macron said the rise in natural gas and energy prices was linked to international developments and military conflicts, adding that France was ready to contribute to diplomatic efforts to resume maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Macron also said France was ready to help ensure the security of maritime transport in the region.
The French president also recalled his talks with the leaders of Middle Eastern countries on new supply routes and solutions in the oil sector. Macron said he would discuss with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen accelerating efforts to build up natural gas stocks across Europe.
Macron said the rapid implementation of existing flexibility measures to lower energy prices would also be put on the agenda, adding that the G7 countries would meet in the coming weeks to discuss energy issues. Macron noted that the meeting would also consider options for using strategic oil reserves.
