Speaking at the opening of the 77th International Astronautical Congress, held for the first time in Antalya, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Türkiye would continue its work in space until it became a strong and respected actor in the global space sector.
Erdoğan said Türkiye had made progress in satellite technologies and lunar research, and called for broader international participation in space activities. Saying that they had not allowed Türkiye to fall behind in the space race, Erdoğan stated that significant progress had been made in a short time despite obstacles and challenges.
Production and integration completed for lunar vehicle
Erdoğan said the production, assembly and integration phases of the spacecraft developed as part of Türkiye's lunar research program had been completed. He said the share of domestic production in the components of the approximately 3.5-tonne vehicle exceeded 80 percent.
Erdoğan said this rate was a major source of pride for Türkiye.
Türksat 6A demonstrated engineering capacity
Referring also to Türkiye's development of its own telecommunications satellite, Türksat 6A, Erdoğan said the satellite demonstrated the country's engineering capabilities, industrial infrastructure, human resources and confidence in space technologies.
Erdoğan also provided information about TEKNOFEST, saying that more than 730,000 teams from all 81 provinces of Türkiye and 97 countries had applied to the event, which he described as the world's largest aviation and technology festival.
Somalia project targets Africa's space ecosystem
Assessing the Türkiye-led project being carried out in Somalia, Erdoğan said the work aimed to develop Türkiye's access to space and contribute to the development of Africa's space ecosystem.
Call for international cooperation in space
Erdoğan stressed that the space race should not be limited to rivalry among a few countries. Saying that space was not a bounty to be claimed by those who reached it first, Erdoğan opposed turning space into an arms race.
Erdoğan wished the congress success in contributing to the participating countries and humanity's shared future, and emphasized the importance of international cooperation in space activities.
