Car factories in St. Petersburg are expected to restore their production capacity to pre-pandemic levels by 2028. Aleksandr Sitov, Chairman of the St. Petersburg Committee on Industrial Policy, Innovation and Trade, said the goal is to once again reach an annual production of several hundred thousand vehicles.
Sitov described this forecast as a medium-term expectation, anticipating that the threshold will be approached within the next 2-3 years. According to him, the facilities in the city have become more modern following renovation efforts, expanding their production capabilities.
Expectations for Recovery in Production
Sitov recalled that St. Petersburg previously accounted for more than one-third of vehicle production in Russia. He expressed that it is possible for the factories in the city to return to these levels again.
The official noted that the first major disruption in automotive production began with the coronavirus pandemic, followed by increased difficulties due to sanctions imposed on the country. Nevertheless, he emphasized that the capacity of the facilities has increased under current conditions.
New Target After Modernization
According to the statement, the renovations at the factories not only preserve current production but also enable a higher production pace. Sitov suggested that this could lead to a new peak in production in the city.
If the 2028 target is achieved, St. Petersburg could once again become one of the strongest centers in Russia’s automotive industry. The city administration views this as a medium-term but achievable goal.
