China’s economy grew 4.5% year on year in the third quarter of 2026, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Monday. The pace was faster than the 4.3% recorded in the second quarter and above the 4.4% consensus forecast compiled by Reuters and Bloomberg.
In the first three quarters, GDP grew 4.6% year on year, with January–September output reaching about 107.11 trillion yuan (about 15.94 trillion dollars). Quarter on quarter, the economy expanded 1.2%.
Within the annual target
Beijing has set a growth target of 4.5% to 5% for this year. Some analysts say the nine-month figure, which falls within the target range, may reduce the need for aggressive stimulus in the fourth quarter.

Exports help, demand lags
According to CNN, exports of chips and electronics linked to the artificial intelligence boom supported growth. The head of the statistics bureau acknowledged, however, that the problem of insufficient domestic demand remains “relatively prominent.”
