A protest against far-right commentator Vito Quiles in Bilbao, Spain, escalated into riots on Monday evening. Quiles had planned to speak near the University of Deusto but canceled the event in advance.
Quiles canceled the event after consulting with the Basque police force Ertzaintza over the risk of clashes. The university suspended classes and closed its buildings that day.
Cars and containers set on fire
The protest, organized by student and antifascist groups, was peaceful, but garbage containers caught fire near the campus at around 7 p.m. as participants began to disperse. The riots then spread to nearby streets. At least six cars were set on fire, a municipal police motorcycle was used as a barricade, and shops and urban infrastructure were damaged. Reports of looting are being investigated.
Teenagers among those arrested

Ertzaintza arrested 19 people, seven of them minors. The oldest detainee is 22. Three other people are being investigated on suspicion of disturbing public order.
The Security Department of the Basque Government condemned the riots, saying that the participants had acted deliberately and that a group of people threw stones at an Ertzaintza station in Deusto.
The riots in Bilbao came two days after clashes in Barcelona, which Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called “pure vandalism.” General elections in the country are scheduled for November 29.
