Spanish Prime Minister and leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) Pedro Sánchez, speaking at an election rally in Gijón, compared his country to the Gaulish village in the Asterix comics that was the only one not conquered by the Roman Empire.
“Be proud that you are a Gaulish village in Europe, a beacon of hope amid so much darkness in the world,” Sánchez said. He urged supporters to turn out for the general election on November 29 and cited the example of Brazil, where Lula da Silva won: “If Brazil could do it, Spain can too.”
Pensions in the Constitution
Sánchez pledged to amend the Constitution during the next legislative term to enshrine guarantees for pensions and their indexation to inflation. He also said the Socialists expect to win the 176 seats needed for an absolute majority.
According to the prime minister, the election will be a choice between progress and the past, solidarity and injustice, love and hatred. Sánchez also criticized the People’s Party, saying that “voting for Feijóo is the same as voting for Vox.”
The 3,000-seat hall was full, while about another 1,000 people were unable to get inside.
Lula thanked Sánchez
Brazilian President Lula da Silva thanked Sánchez for his support and called the two countries “allies in global progressivism.” Lula won the runoff on October 25, defeating Flavio Bolsonaro by more than 4 million votes.
