Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine has profoundly impacted domestic security. Over the past two years, top Russian generals have been targeted not only on the battlefield but also in attacks carried out in Moscow and its vicinity.
In December 2024, Igor Kirillov, commander of Russia's Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection Troops, was killed by a bomb detonated outside his home in Moscow. Kirillov's deputy, Ilya Polikarpov, also died in the attack. The detained assailant confessed to being tasked by Ukrainian special services and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
In addition to Kirillov, generals Fanyl Sarvarov and Yaroslav Moskalik were also killed in similar bomb attacks. Another general reportedly survived an armed attack.
Most recently, on August 1, 2026, an explosion occurred at a restaurant in Moscow's Barrikadnaya district. Some Telegram channels claimed the blast targeted Alexander Chaiko, who was appointed commander of the Russian Aerospace Forces in May 2026. Among officials, only Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin described the incident as a 'terrorist act'.
These assassination attempts show that the war has spread to the heart of Russia and that the security of top military commanders is under serious threat. Investigations continue into the links behind the incidents.
