US Defense Secretary Troy Meink announced at a conference in Maryland that his country possesses space-control weapons in orbit. Meink said the capability would be used to defend US joint forces against hostile actions.
Meink said they were increasing preparations in response to the changing threat environment and stressed that the US must maintain its superiority not only in the air but also in space. However, he did not provide details on the type of weapons or when they were deployed.
The announcement marked the first time the US had confirmed that it possesses offensive capabilities in space.
Possibility of disabling satellites
The US accuses China and Russia of seeking to develop military capabilities in space. Washington's capabilities in space are intended to defend its forces and satellites in the event of a threat.
A US official said the capability could include disabling enemy satellites if US forces or satellites were targeted.
