Ukrainian armed forces carried out a new drone attack targeting critical logistics infrastructure in southern Russia. The targets were two distribution centers of Wildberries, the country's largest online retailer.
The company's founder, Tatyana Kim, confirmed that warehouses in the Krasnodar and Stavropol regions were hit. Kim said at least one person was killed and many were injured in the attacks.
Krasnodar Region Governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported that 10 people were injured in an attack on a storage facility in the regional center. The governor later announced that an injured woman died after being taken to hospital.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the attacks in southern Russia and accused Wildberries of supplying drone parts and other equipment to the Russian military.
More than 100 firefighters and a special helicopter were deployed to extinguish the fire at the Wildberries warehouse in Krasnodar. Footage shared on social media showed a huge plume of smoke rising from the warehouse.
These attacks in southern Russia followed a drone strike on Wildberries warehouses in the Moscow and Tambov regions over the weekend that killed eight workers. The repair cost for the damaged facilities is expected to reach up to 35.8 billion rubles ($457 million). Industry experts said it is not possible for insurance companies to fully cover this bill.
The attacks on Wildberries distribution centers are seen as part of Ukraine's strategy to undermine Russia's war effort and bring the conflict home by affecting the lives of ordinary citizens.
The company's founder, Tatyana Kim, said in a statement on Telegram: "There are no words to describe the feelings and emotions caused by attacks on ordinary people, our employees, on all of us who are just doing our jobs."
On the same day, a separate attack in the city of Armavir in the Krasnodar region killed one person when drone debris fell on an industrial facility. Officials later said an oil refinery was targeted in that attack.
In the western Bryansk region, Russia's largest meat producer Miratorg reported that three of its facilities were targeted in Ukrainian attacks. The company said a security guard was injured and that one of the facilities suffered "significant" damage.
