Türkiye’s first remote robotic surgery performed from a laboratory was carried out on a patient. The patient underwent a hysterectomy through a telesurgery connection between the Turkish Health Institutes’ TÜSEB İDEA center in Istanbul and Muş State Hospital. The distance between the cities is about 1,400 kilometers.
Associate Professor Derman Başaran of Hacettepe University’s Faculty of Medicine controlled the robotic system in Muş’s operating room in real time from a surgical console in Istanbul. Gynecologist Haticegül Tuncer of Muş State Hospital assumed responsibility in the operating room. Başaran performed part of the operation remotely and advised her colleagues during certain stages.

The patient is 43 years old. The operation was required because of prolonged heavy bleeding; no oncological disease was detected. Başaran said telesurgery would allow patients to receive complex treatment without traveling long distances, while enabling experienced surgeons to assist and train their colleagues.
TÜSEB İDEA Director Batuhan Yeşilyurt said the center supports specialists undergoing robotic surgery training and will continue developing telesurgery projects.
