Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke to journalists at the train station in Przemyśl, Poland, ahead of his visit to Ukraine. Fidan stressed that Turkey is actively working to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
Recalling that he traveled to Moscow last month to convey President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's messages, Fidan said that during his meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, they learned Moscow's position on Ukraine.
Pointing out that there are two different approaches to this crisis in Europe, Fidan said:
There are two separate directions: how to support military efforts and how to stop the war. Turkey is more focused on how to end the war.
Fidan stated that he will meet with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy and Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga in Kyiv, where he will convey President Erdoğan's messages and continue Ankara's mediation efforts.
Recalling that they hosted negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul last year, Fidan said Turkey facilitated contacts between the parties and undertook initiatives such as the grain deal that ensured safe navigation in the Black Sea. "Today's efforts are based on all this accumulated experience. I believe my visit will make a positive contribution," Fidan said.
Fidan noted that he traveled by train because Ukraine's airspace is closed, and the journey would take about 10 hours. He also added that he attended the "Coalition of the Willing" leaders' summit in Paris and that the Ukraine crisis remains on the international agenda.
Statements on FETÖ
Fidan also touched on the 10th anniversary of the July 15, 2016 coup attempt. He stated that although FETÖ is an "expired entity," it continues its destructive activities against the state.
FETÖ is an expired entity. Despite this, it continues its struggle against the state and the people's elected leaders. Moreover, it cooperates with dirty international power centers. This is absolutely shameful.
Emphasizing that after July 15, the state and the nation entered a new struggle for liberation, Fidan said that the state, purged of FETÖ, returned to its founding principles and began serving the people. He added that Ankara is making intense efforts to end FETÖ's illegal activities in the countries where it operates.
