After attacks on two Turkish-owned cargo ships off Novorossiysk, Turkey called on Russia and Ukraine to take concrete steps for safe navigation in the Black Sea. In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said the Panama-flagged Yasar and Cameroon-flagged Nadezhda were targeted on Monday evening after departing Novorossiysk.
The statement noted that many crew members, including Turkish nationals, were injured in the attacks. The ministry expressed concern over the Russia-Ukraine war spreading to a wider area in the Black Sea, warning that this would have multifaceted negative consequences, including for food security.
Crew Status and Ships
According to information from the Turkish Maritime Authority, the Nadezhda was attacked about 20 nautical miles off Novorossiysk while en route to Samsun. Twenty-two crew members, three of them seriously injured, were taken to a safe area in Russia, while the fire at the ship's bow was reported to be ongoing.
According to ship tracking data, the Panama-flagged Yasar and Cameroon-flagged Nadezhda are owned by Turkish companies. Ukrainian officials, who frequently claim responsibility for attacks on Russian warships and oil tankers, have not yet commented on these latest incidents.
Escalating Tensions in the Black Sea
The attacks are the latest in a weeks-long chain of tit-for-tat actions in which Russia and Ukraine have targeted each other's commercial ships and ports. This has driven up global wheat prices.
Monday's incidents came after a Turkish fishing vessel was hit off Crimea in late June, killing one person. In May, a Turkish cargo ship was also subjected to a similar attack.
Turkish officials had warned of an 'uncontrolled escalation' in the Black Sea amid these attacks. During the harvest season, both Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of endangering grain exports in the region.
