Ersin Akbaş, living in Antalya, faced various difficulties throughout his life due to a chain of errors that began with being registered as a girl and under the name 'Ergün' at birth in the population registry. Akbaş received his primary school diploma under the name 'Ersun' and served in the military under two different names. He served with his own name in 1986-1987 and with the name 'Ersün' during the 1990 mobilization.
Living with the names 'Ergün', 'Ersun', 'Ergin', 'Ersün', and 'Ersin' in total, Akbaş experienced serious problems in social security, job finding, and official procedures due to this situation. During the process of name determination and work accident lawsuits he filed for retirement rights, the appellate court decided to re-examine the cases in light of new documents.
The court ruled that the accident Akbaş had in 2005 was a work accident and postponed the case to June 6. Akbaş stated that significant developments occurred in his 21-year work accident and 30-year name determination cases. The Supreme Court also decided to correct the names.
Describing the difficulties and legal struggle he has experienced for years, Akbaş said, "I am known as the unluckiest person in the world. I lived with 5 names but could not find myself. Now I hope for the unification of my name and to attain my true identity." He also expressed his wish for the name 'Ergün Akbaş' to be on his tombstone.
