Syria’s Ministry of Economy and Industry established the Syrian side of the Syria-Azerbaijan Business Council to manage economic relations with Azerbaijan. A decision published on Sunday set out the council’s leadership and operating framework.
Council leadership announced
Fahd Abdulaziz Musa was appointed chair of the council, while Ahmed Mohammed Kheikhya and Omar Adnan Sharm were named deputy chairs. Jihad Ahmed Mutuk was appointed secretary-general, and Abdurrahman Rais became executive director.
Under the decision, the council will operate in line with the basic regulations governing joint Syrian business councils established with countries around the world. The Syria-Azerbaijan Business Council was defined as the sole council approved by the Ministry of Economy and Industry to represent Syria in relations with the Azerbaijani side.
The body will coordinate with relevant institutions and conduct its activities in line with the Syrian business council system and the country’s economic priorities.
Energy memorandum signed in Baku
Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa made his first visit to Azerbaijan after taking office in mid-July. During talks in Baku with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, al-Sharaa discussed relations between the two countries, particularly economic cooperation, as well as cooperation in various other areas.
During the visit, Syria’s Ministry of Energy and Azerbaijan’s state-owned energy company SOCAR signed a memorandum of understanding providing for the supply of natural gas to Syria.
Since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government on December 8, 2024, the Syrian government has continued efforts to develop relations with the international community and sign agreements and memorandums of understanding as part of its economic recovery policy.
