Scammers in Russia are using a new deception method, taking advantage of increased construction and renovation activity during the summer months. The press service of the 'Moshelovka' platform, affiliated with the People's Front, announced that offers claiming to sell construction materials at prices far below market value on social media and popular classified sites are increasing.
Scammers use excuses like 'warehouse liquidation' or 'leftover materials from a large project'
The scammers explain their sales with reasons like 'warehouse liquidation' or 'leftover materials from a large construction project'. They offer to sell the materials for almost half the market price. However, to proceed with the transaction, they demand full or partial advance payment from the buyer, ostensibly to 'lock in the price' or arrange delivery.
The sellers then disappear after receiving payment, and buyers are unable to recover either their money or the materials. This fraud scheme targets holiday homeowners, those with plots in rural areas, and people planning renovations at home.
Fraud cases increase during summer months
The 'Moshelovka' platform noted that this scam method increases particularly in June, as it is traditionally the period when widespread construction and repair work begins. It stated that criminals seize the opportunity of consumers seeking cheaper materials in response to seasonal price increases.
The platform provided security advice to citizens
'Moshelovka' officials warned citizens with the following advice:
- Never make an advance payment on classified sites without seeing the materials and the seller personally.
- A price as low as half the market price is a clear sign of a scam. Always check the average market value of the materials.
- Use only the secure, integrated payment services of large platforms, where money is blocked until the goods are received.
