Lionel Scaloni said he could continue as head coach of the Argentina national team. The coach said he would remain in charge if plans proceeded as intended.
Scaloni had previously said he was ready to leave his position after the 2026 World Cup. In September, the possibility of his resignation was discussed with Argentina Football Association President Claudio Tapia, while the federation was expected to try to keep the coach in his position. Scaloni’s contract runs through the end of 2026.
Messi’s national team career has ended
Scaloni’s comments came after Lionel Messi played his final match for the Argentina national team. Argentina beat Benin 3-0 in a friendly, with Messi scoring from the penalty spot and providing two assists.

The Argentine coach described Messi’s legacy as extraordinary. Scaloni said a player like Messi would never be seen on the pitch again and expressed his gratitude to the star footballer.
Scaloni said Argentina would enter a new era and build a different squad with younger or new players. The coach said Messi’s impact on the team could not be replaced and described working alongside Messi during his tenure as Argentina coach as a privilege.

Trophies Scaloni won with Argentina

Argentina reached the final of the 2026 World Cup but lost 1-0 to Spain after extra time.
