Russia’s Embassy in Norway has called for the release of the Russian research vessel Professor Molchanov, which is being held at Barentsburg Port in Svalbard.
On 2 October, the embassy called for the vessel’s detention to end and for Professor Molchanov to return to Russia without hindrance. The statement said that the approaching end of the navigation season should also be taken into consideration.

Held in connection with the Naftogaz lawsuit
Professor Molchanov was detained on 2 September under a Norwegian court ruling in connection with a lawsuit filed by the Ukrainian company Naftogaz. The Russian research vessel remains at Barentsburg Port in Svalbard.
Challenge taken to court
Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, announced on 30 September that a challenge had been filed in court against the Norwegian authorities’ decision to detain the vessel.

The merits of the case are expected to be examined in October and November.
