The Social Policy Commission of the Council of Legislators of the Russian Federation set priorities for developing interregional cooperation in patriotic education at the end of a meeting held in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, South Sakhalin. More than 40 people, including Tambov Regional Duma Chairman Evgeny Matushkin, took part in the meeting.
The meeting at the Sakhalin Regional Duma was attended by representatives of federal and regional institutions, members of municipal councils joining by videoconference, and representatives of the Youth Parliament. Sakhalin Regional Duma Chairwoman Elena Kasyanova gave a presentation on work with young people, support for veterans and special military operation participants, and legal mechanisms and regional laws that contribute to preserving historical memory.
Matushkin said that, under the current geopolitical conditions, patriotic education was one of the key issues for the country's future. He said they had learned about the work carried out by the Sakhalin Regional Duma and in the region, and cited as an example a photo exhibition dedicated to the anniversary of the end of World War II and the victory over militarist Japan.
Military history and commemorative program
The three-day program addressed commemorative events and military history alongside patriotic education. After arriving in the city, the commission members commemorated the soldiers who died during the liberation of South Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands and laid flowers at the monument in Victory Square.
The delegation also visited the Sakhalin Regional Museum of Local History and the Pobeda Museum and Memorial Complex, where they viewed the exhibitions. A photo exhibition opened at the Sakhalin Regional Duma building paid tribute to the soldiers who served during the liberation of the region.
Matushkin said participants from different regions had shared successful practices. He said effective approaches should be implemented across the country and the work should be coordinated systematically.
The proposals put forward at the roundtable were planned to be included in the final resolution. As the program continued, the commission members visited commemorative sites in Sakhalin.
The delegation traveled to Kamyshovy Pass, within the municipal boundaries of Kholmsk, where one of the clashes took place during the liberation of South Sakhalin from Japanese occupation in 1945. On the commemorative day, participants from military history clubs in 12 Russian regions staged a historical reenactment of the clash that took place at Kamyshovy Pass on August 22, 1945.
Those attending the meeting also laid flowers at the monument at Kholmsk Pass.
