Two female tourists staying at a hotel in Georgia were physically attacked for speaking Russian on the balcony. One of the guests at a wedding held at the Agarani Estate Hotel shouted at the women as they opened champagne and spoke Russian, then forced his way into their room.
The attacker, who entered the room, punched Yuliya, a graduate of Istanbul Bilgi University, breaking her nose. Yuliya is still receiving treatment at the hospital. Following the incident, Russian social media users in particular lowered the hotel's rating from 5 to 2.4 within hours and called for the hotel to be shut down.
The hotel management stated that the attacker was not one of their employees. However, the victimized tourists claimed that hotel staff asked them to delete footage of the attack and that their social media accounts were blocked after they refused.
The Georgian side denied the claim that the incident occurred because of speaking Russian. In a statement, it was alleged that the incident resulted from provocative behavior by the other party and that the women initiated the first physical contact. In recent years, anti-Russian rhetoric has been known to increase in some segments of Georgian society due to political tensions with Russia.
Georgia's Ministry of Internal Affairs announced that the suspect has been charged with intentional minor injury and faces up to three years in prison. The attacker was taken into custody.
