The Kremlin-appointed governor of Russia's occupied Zaporizhzhia region, Yevgeny Balitsky, announced during a meeting with President Vladimir Putin that full control has been achieved over the vital R-280 supply highway connecting Crimea to the Russian mainland.
During a televised meeting at the Kremlin on Monday, Balitsky said the Russian army has used 'new methods and new equipment' against Ukrainian drones that have targeted supply trucks in recent months, but he did not provide details about these methods.
The claim comes as Ukraine has vowed to isolate Crimea by gaining control of this route. The commander of Ukraine's drone forces had pledged in June to 'isolate' Crimea from the Russian mainland by seizing control of the R-280, which passes partly through occupied Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions.
Supply shortages in Crimea have manifested particularly as a fuel crisis. Kremlin-appointed Crimean officials introduced fuel rationing in May after supplies entering the region decreased. According to data from Russia's Federal State Statistics Service Rosstat, the average retail price of gasoline in Crimea reached 185.18 rubles per liter on July 13.
Ukrainian forces have also destroyed a series of bridges connecting Crimea to occupied southern regions, causing significant restrictions on commercial and passenger traffic on major highways in the area.
