Statements by Belgian officials alleging that threats originated from Russia have caused diplomatic tensions between Moscow and Brussels. Russia’s Foreign Ministry summoned Belgium’s ambassador to Moscow to the ministry on Tuesday, October 13.
The ministry rejected allegations from Belgium’s military and political leadership that Russia had carried out hybrid, destructive and direct military threats. The statement said such accusations had been voiced more frequently in recent times.
Moscow warns of rising tensions
Russia’s Foreign Ministry argued that aggressive rhetoric describing Russia as an “enemy” increases the risk of confrontation. The ministry said these statements could escalate tensions and cause the situation between the sides to spiral out of control.
Moscow also called on Belgium to consider the consequences of its wording and tone down its anti-Russian rhetoric. The ministry claimed that this rhetoric was also fueling tensions across Europe.
Francken calls on Europe to prepare
Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken said at the end of last month that Europe should be prepared for new Russian hybrid attacks that could occur in the coming months. Francken said the continent faced the threat of a “dark winter.”

Francken also described Russia as the “greatest threat” to the security of Belgium and Europe and called for Europe’s air defense system to be strengthened.
