Russia said U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to halt attacks on energy infrastructure in Ukraine should not remain at the level of statements and called for concrete implementation.
Kremlin views proposal positively
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described Trump’s energy ceasefire proposal as “a very good idea” at a news conference on Tuesday.
Peskov said measures to ensure the safe operation of oil refineries under an energy ceasefire would not, on their own, resolve the underlying problem in global oil product markets.
In a statement posted on Truth Social on Monday, Trump said Moscow and Kyiv had agreed not to target each other’s energy infrastructure. He also said the conflict that began in February 2022 was the main reason for the rise in global diesel prices.
Zakharova calls for concrete implementation
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said at a news conference held Tuesday in Yekaterinburg as part of the 2026 International Youth Festival that the Kremlin had already addressed the issue and saw no need for a new assessment.
“The most important thing now is to turn these statements into action,” Zakharova said. The spokesperson maintained that Russia had always complied with ceasefires declared during the war, claiming that the same could not be said of Kyiv.
The Russian spokesperson also stressed that all statements must be backed by concrete actions that guarantee their implementation.
Zelenskyy calls for a long-term commitment
In an evening address late Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said they were ready to take steps to reduce tensions if Washington ensured that Russia was genuinely prepared to end the war for the long term.
Zelenskyy said peace was necessary and that energy, food routes and critical infrastructure should be part of talks aimed at ending the attacks. The Ukrainian president said they expected concrete proposals from their partners.
