Romania increased air surveillance in the border region after three drones were spotted near the Ukrainian border. Romania’s Defense Ministry announced that two F-16 fighter jets and a military helicopter were deployed following the incident.
The drones were detected around the Ukrainian city of Vylkove, near Romania’s border and the Danube Delta. An RO-Alert warning was sent to residents of settlements north of Tulcea province over the possibility of an airborne object falling.

The drones did not enter Romania
Two F-16s belonging to the Romanian Air Force took off to monitor the situation. A military helicopter was also sent to the area to conduct surveillance along the border.

Romania’s Defense Ministry said radar records showed that the drones remained in Ukrainian airspace and did not enter Romanian airspace. The public warning was lifted after authorities concluded that there was no immediate threat to Romanian territory.
Air security measures along NATO’s border
Romania, a member of NATO and the European Union, shares a border with Ukraine along the Danube River. The country has previously launched military aircraft because of drone activity near the border.
Drone fragments were found in Romania’s border regions following Russian attacks on ports in Ukraine and infrastructure along the Danube. The government in Bucharest strengthened air surveillance and defense measures in the area amid concerns that the conflict could spread to NATO borders.
