The detection of lumpy skin disease in cattle in several towns and villages about 25 kilometers from Moscow has led to the implementation of quarantine measures in the region.
Cattle, cattle products including milk, and feed may not be transported into the areas under quarantine. Agricultural fairs have also been banned in these areas.
The disease causes fever in cattle
Lumpy skin disease is a viral infection spread mainly by biting insects. The disease causes fever and painful skin nodules in cattle, leading to weight loss and reduced milk production.
The disease does not infect humans. Lumpy skin disease, which is widespread in North Africa, was also detected in several European countries last year.
Restrictions also introduced in the Irkutsk region
Authorities in the Irkutsk region near Lake Baikal began quarantine measures in two settlements at the start of the week because of the same disease. The culling of infected animals was ordered in the region.
In the spring, many cattle in Siberia were culled because of diseases identified as pasteurellosis or rabies. The measure sparked protests by local farmers, while the decision to cull infected cattle in France also drew opposition from farmers' unions.
