Alexander Kynev was detained in Moscow on Friday on charges of producing, selling and trafficking large quantities of illegal drugs. The charges carry a prison sentence of up to 20 years.
Kynev’s lawyer said his client denied the allegations. Law enforcement authorities did not comment on the detention.
Kynev’s political and academic background
Kynev has worked as a political consultant since the 1990s. Early in his career, he worked on election campaigns for the liberal Yabloko party. In later years, he worked with various independent political organizations, including the now-defunct election-monitoring group Golos.
Kynev also regularly wrote opinion pieces for The Moscow Times, which was designated an “undesirable organization” in 2024.
Kynev previously served as a professor of political science at the Higher School of Economics, a National Research University in Moscow, and published commentary on Russian and global politics on his Telegram channel. The channel’s latest post was published on Wednesday morning.
Despite his criticism of the government and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Kynev chose to remain in Moscow as political repression intensified. Russia’s Justice Ministry designated Kynev a “foreign agent” in February.
