Russia has awarded the captain of the Soobrazitelny corvette following an incident involving a Danish military helicopter in the Baltic Sea. Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov presented the unnamed captain with the Medal of Courage on Wednesday.
The Russian Defense Ministry said the medal was presented in recognition of the captain’s "skillful and decisive actions."
Russia’s account includes two flares
The incident occurred when the Russian Baltic Fleet’s Soobrazitelny corvette encountered a Danish military helicopter in international waters. The ministry said the corvette detected the helicopter southwest of the Baltic Sea on Monday and received no response to its radio calls.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the crew fired two flares toward the helicopter. The aircraft then moved away from the Russian warship. Russia argued that the intervention prevented a provocation.
Copenhagen said the incident unfolded differently
Danish Defense Minister Jeppe Bruus said the Soobrazitelny crew had not attempted to communicate with the helicopter. According to Bruus, the helicopter narrowly avoided the flares fired toward it.
The Danish minister said the helicopter was following a routine route it had used several times before to photograph the corvette. Bruus also said Russia had become prepared to take further steps involving risk.
Incident heightened diplomatic tensions
Denmark summoned Russia’s ambassador to Copenhagen, Vladimir Barbin, following the incident. Barbin argued that Danish military aircraft had carried out dangerous maneuvers near Russian warships, creating a risk of collision.
Barbin claimed that Denmark had rejected Moscow’s proposals for a maritime and airspace agreement that could prevent similar incidents. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Russia was trying to create fear and division through the incident.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also linked the incident to a broader pattern of Russian aggression and provocation against Europe.
Denmark’s straits are a main route for maritime traffic
Denmark’s straits form the main maritime route for commercial and military vessels entering and leaving the Baltic Sea. The area is also among the important routes for global oil transportation, including Russia-linked oil tankers used to circumvent Western sanctions.
