Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Kirill Dmitriev is continuing talks in the United States on establishing economic cooperation between Russia and the United States.
Speaking at a news conference on Friday, Peskov said potential economic cooperation was discussed during Dmitriev’s meetings with U.S. negotiators. Peskov said there is currently no economic cooperation between Moscow and Washington but that both sides recognize that such a partnership could provide mutual benefits in the future.
Talks in New York
Dmitriev met in New York with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of U.S. President Donald Trump. The talks covered the possibility of economic cooperation as well as peace efforts related to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Dmitriev, who was in New York during United Nations General Assembly week, was seen outside a hotel in Manhattan.
Washington-Beijing contacts and sanctions
Peskov described the latest talks between the United States and China as an “engagement of critical importance” for Moscow and said Russia was closely monitoring them.
Regarding the new sanctions measure enacted into law last week by U.S. President Donald Trump, Peskov said it was not yet known when or how the possible measures known as “hell sanctions” would be implemented, or whether they would be implemented at all.
The measure allows existing sanctions against Russia to be expanded and provides for primary and secondary sanctions, tariffs and bans against Russian officials, oligarchs, their family members, foreign individuals, banks and other financial institutions identified as supporting the war in Ukraine. The legislation also plans to expand existing sanctions against Iran.
Criticism of the EU’s decision targeting an RT executive
Peskov also criticized the European Union’s decision to impose sanctions on Ksenia Fedorova, the former head of the French branch of Russia-based broadcaster RT. He described the decision as “open pressure” against the media and “harassment” targeting media representatives.
