Falling debris from a drone intercepted in the airspace over the Saudi city of Taif killed one person and injured two others. Saudi authorities announced the incident on Thursday.
Two days before the incident, coalition forces supporting Yemen’s legitimate government said Saudi air defenses had thwarted an attempt by the Houthis to target Mecca with a drone.
Pakistani army spokesperson Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said Islamabad’s support for Saudi Arabia’s security was unconditional in the context of the attacks. Chaudhry said Pakistan would make every effort needed to defend the kingdom and would stand with Saudi Arabia diplomatically and practically.
Emphasizing practical support in particular, Chaudhry said every step requested and needed by Saudi Arabia would be taken to protect the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina. He added that the Pakistani people also supported the people of Saudi Arabia and said Pakistan would continue defending Saudi Arabia against all types of attacks.
Pakistan emphasizes negotiations
Chaudhry said Pakistan was in constant contact with Saudi Arabia and the countries of the region, adding that Islamabad was making a serious and sincere effort to resolve problems peacefully through negotiations.
Chaudhry reiterated that Pakistan’s commitment to Saudi Arabia’s security was unconditional. He said this commitment stemmed from the deep, historic and unbreakable ties between the two peoples and the political and military leaderships of the two countries.
Houthi attacks and blockade statement
The Houthis announced on July 20 that they were imposing a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia. The group described the move as a response to the maritime and air blockade imposed by Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia has led the coalition supporting Yemen’s legitimate government since March 2015. The Houthis have controlled the capital, Sanaa, and several provinces in Yemen since September 2014.
The Houthis have carried out attacks targeting Saudi-owned vessels as well as energy production facilities in the country. Civilians were injured and material damage was caused in the attacks.
