Little Maryam Ahmed Ghanem of Gaza City lost the last of her parents on Wednesday. Her father died at the start of the war; her mother, Reem Awad, was killed when an Israeli strike hit their apartment at dawn on Oct. 14.
The strike hit a residential building in the Rimal neighborhood of western Gaza City, close to Al-Shifa Hospital. The apartment caught fire, trapping the girl, who is about 3 years old.
Rescuers could not reach her mother
A group of young men led by journalist Ali al-Jaafarawi broke into the burning flat. In video of the rescue, one of them is heard shouting, "Oh God, there are children here, they’re alive." Maryam was brought out of the fire, but thick smoke kept the rescuers from her mother.

Maryam suffered burns and serious injuries and is under medical care.
In Gaza, residents are often left to fight fires and pull out the wounded on their own until ambulance and civil defense crews arrive.
