The Norwegian government is working on a bill that would subject commercial relations with Israeli settlements that seize occupied Palestinian territories to criminal penalties. The bill proposes prison sentences of up to three years for those who engage in such trade.
Norwegian official Eide said the regulation aims to prevent economic support from being provided to Israeli settlements. Eide said the government also plans to ban the provision of certain services, in addition to trade.
Arguing that Western countries have changed their stance toward Israelis who seize Palestinian land, Eide said Israel had become accustomed to intimidating Western countries by accusing them in response to criticism of its human rights violations. Eide said this approach was no longer effective.

The bill is expected to be submitted to the Norwegian Parliament in the coming months.
Twelve countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Norway and Canada, announced on September 8 that they had decided to ban trade with Israeli settlements that seize occupied Palestinian territories.
