Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin announced that Russian air defenses had downed 37 unmanned aerial vehicles headed for the capital overnight.
In statements made after midnight, Sobyanin said air defense forces under Russia's Defense Ministry had neutralized the drones. The drones were downed in three separate groups of 10, 17 and 10.
Teams sent to areas where debris fell
Emergency crews were dispatched to the areas where the drone debris fell and began response operations. Sobyanin said the teams were continuing their work in those areas.
It remains unknown whether the debris caused casualties on the ground or structural damage. The Ukrainian authorities also made no official statement on the launch of the drones.
Long-range attacks in the Russia-Ukraine war
The attack took place as long-range drone and missile strikes increased during the Russia-Ukraine war, which is entering its fifth year, while the broader picture on the front remained largely static.
