In Russia's Yekaterinburg, meteorologist Alexey Pulin explained that the conditions for tornado and whirlwind formation can be predicted. Pulin stated that by analyzing atmospheric forecast parameters, suitable conditions for the development of such phenomena can be calculated.
Method for predicting whirlwind formation
Pulin said that first, atmospheric forecast parameters are analyzed. Based on model data, it is calculated whether there are suitable conditions for the development of tornado-like phenomena. With this method, an area is identified where the development of strong storm cells following whirlwinds is most likely.
The meteorologist added that the situation is monitored in real time using Doppler radar or real-time satellite images updated several times an hour.
Critical factors in whirlwind formation
Pulin noted that in the formation of such phenomena, the wind shear factor is as important as strong atmospheric instability and the presence of moisture. Wind shear is defined as the change in wind direction with height, which creates a rotational moment.
He said that the strength of a whirlwind generally cannot be determined in advance. However, if atmospheric instability indices are very high, the chance of a higher-category whirlwind is also greater.
Tornado and whirlwind are the same phenomenon
Pulin explained that tornado and whirlwind are practically the same phenomenon. A tornado forms in strong storms and is associated with a mesocyclone. The term whirlwind also covers other phenomena, including whirlwinds not associated with a mesocyclone and waterspouts.
The meteorologist stated that such phenomena are not normal for the Ural region, but they are seen every year.
Whirlwind seen in Kushva
On Monday, local media reported that a tornado was seen in the city of Kushva, Sverdlovsk region. Later, scientists explained that it was a whirlwind.
According to published videos, the whirlwind hit the city and damaged roofs of houses, trees, and power lines. The press service of the Sverdlovsk region Ministry of Emergency Situations reported that emergency services were eliminating the consequences of the disaster. Six people received medical assistance, and four of them were hospitalized.
