Until now, only Nvidia had closed above that level, first doing so in October 2025. The chipmaker remains the world’s most valuable company at about $5.3 trillion, but its lead over Apple has narrowed to roughly $300 billion.

Apple’s record came on a day its rivals lost ground: Nvidia fell about 3.2% and Microsoft about 1.8% amid a sell-off in technology stocks.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple had climbed above $5 trillion during trading six times before but failed to hold it into the close. It first touched the mark intraday on July 28.

The milestone came about six weeks after a change at the top: John Ternus took over as chief executive from Tim Cook on Sept. 1.
