Ahead of the 2026 World Cup final, Barcelona Club resurfaced the historic photo taken 18 years ago that shows Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal together. The photo was taken in 2008 for a charity calendar prepared by the Barcelona Foundation to benefit UNICEF.
The report published on the club's official website described the frame showing the then 20-year-old Argentine star holding a few-month-old Spanish baby Lamine Yamal as 'captivating'. Barcelona said, 'This captivating frame now remains a historic moment.'

According to the report, the 2008 edition of the calendar, which had been printed annually since 2004 in collaboration with Sport newspaper, focused on worldwide child support programs. Barcelona players of the time such as Deco, Bojan Krkić, Rafael Márquez and Xavi Hernández also participated in the shoot.
The club stated, 'Messi's path first crossed with Lamine Yamal, who was then a baby, here. That day, no one could have imagined that this baby, if he fulfilled his early talent, could follow in the footsteps of the Argentine star.' It also emphasized that Yamal's performance at age 16 was unique and that even Messi had not achieved such success at the same age.
The 2026 World Cup final will be played on Sunday in New Jersey, USA. Argentina aims to defend the championship it won in Qatar in 2022, while Spain hopes to claim the trophy for the first time since 2010.
