Brazil national team star Neymar announced his retirement from international football after his side lost 2-1 to Norway in the 2026 World Cup round of 16, ending their tournament.
After the match at MetLife Stadium, a tearful Neymar said, "I tried. It started here and it ended here. It's over now."
The 34-year-old, who made his Brazil debut on August 10, 2010, against the United States at the same stadium, is his country's all-time leading goalscorer.
Neymar came on in the final minutes against Norway and scored a penalty. After the final whistle, the star was emotional and was consoled by his teammates.
Neymar, who battled a right calf injury throughout the tournament, featured in only two of Brazil's five matches. He played just 15 minutes in the group stage match against Scotland.
Neymar's farewell marks the start of a transition to a new generation for Brazil. Team captain Marquinhos said, "We ask people to be patient with the new generation and support them from the very beginning."
