German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Saturday at the Christian Social Union congress in Munich that Russia was trying to destabilize Germany.
Merz said Russia’s war against Ukraine had seriously disrupted Europe’s peace order and stated that the continent faced a major threat in the east.
We also see Russia trying to destabilize Germany every day.
According to Merz, the threat is not limited to the war in Ukraine. The chancellor said cyberattacks, acts of sabotage and attempts targeting critical infrastructure had been seen across Europe, citing the incident at Leipzig Airport on August 4 as an example.

Merz said these developments, together with efforts to destabilize democratic societies, threatened freedoms, adding that Germany was investing to protect its freedom.
Jaeger: Confrontation with Russia has entered a more dangerous phase
Merz’s remarks came after a warning from Martin Jaeger, head of Germany’s foreign intelligence service. Jaeger said in information provided to parliament’s intelligence committee on October 5 that the confrontation with Russia had entered a more dangerous phase.
Jaeger said Germany faced the risk of being drawn into an armed conflict with Russia and cited the incident in Leipzig as one example of this risk. He said the incident was linked to an attempted drone attack in August that was said to have targeted a Ukrainian cargo plane.
Jaeger also said that, at present, no other country posed a more direct, comprehensive and concrete threat to Germany than Russia.
