Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev stated that Iran uses the Strait of Hormuz as a strategic tool equivalent to a nuclear weapon. Medvedev added that Tehran could also deploy the Bab el-Mandeb Strait as a 'thermonuclear weapon'.
In remarks to journalists, Medvedev said, 'Instead of an actual nuclear weapon, Iran found another weapon that is no weaker: the Strait of Hormuz. By closing the passage, it demonstrated its power, and now negotiations are underway on how the strait will operate, and agreements are being reached.'
The Russian official said that Iran possesses not only this 'nuclear weapon' but also the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which he described as a 'thermonuclear weapon.' Medvedev stated, 'In the event of a military conflict, this strait could be used to lock down all oil and other transportation. I hope it does not come to that, but all countries pursuing conflict in the region should keep this in mind.'
Medvedev reported that during his meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran, they discussed joint efforts against illegal sanctions. Reminding that China, along with Russia and Iran, is also subjected to sanctions, Medvedev stressed that such restrictions are unlawful and must be resisted.
Medvedev said, 'We could discuss the idea of creating a platform or agreement where sanctioned countries can come together to discuss how to resist and even impose counter-sanctions.'
Noting that the process of reaching a final agreement between the US and Iran is 'extremely difficult,' Medvedev said, 'Reaching a compromise here was not easy at all. Now there is a document, and time is ticking to reach final agreements. Frankly, I think this process will be very tough.'
Medvedev also said that Iran's nuclear program is cited as a justification for US aggression, but no one has yet presented concrete evidence. He added that Russia has proposals for a peaceful resolution of this issue.
