Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Ghana was planning joint work to shut down illegal recruitment channels linked to citizens joining Russia’s “special military operation.”
Lavrov said the issue was raised during his August 17 meeting with Ghanaian Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The Ghanaian side brought up illegal channels recruiting citizens in connection with their participation in the operation.
Contracts signed with the Russian Armed Forces
Lavrov said citizens of some countries, including African states, had signed contracts with the Russian Armed Forces. The Russian foreign minister argued that some of these individuals signed the contracts to demonstrate solidarity with Moscow, while others did so for material and financial reasons.
Lavrov said information on the terms of the contracts was publicly available from various sources and stated that the process was under the supervision of Russia’s Defense Ministry.
Lavrov also said the Defense Ministry was reviewing applications concerning citizens of some countries joining Russia’s operation. He added that any new requests from Ghana would also be assessed by the relevant body within the ministry.
