Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan met in Manama, the capital of Bahrain, to discuss the escalation in Yemen and regional security.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of a ministerial meeting between the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and Russia. The sides discussed regional developments alongside bilateral relations.
Maritime shipping security in the straits
The escalation in Yemen was among the main issues discussed at the meeting, which also addressed ongoing threats to maritime shipping in the Straits of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb.
The meeting also covered efforts to preserve security and stability in the region.
Military escalation in Yemen since July
The meeting in Manama took place as the military escalation between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis in Yemen has continued since last July. During this period, attacks were carried out against civil aviation facilities and energy companies in Saudi Arabia.
Regional tensions continued despite delays in implementing the Islamabad Memorandum signed by the United States and Iran on June 17, 2026. The memorandum provided for an end to the military operations that began at the end of February and arrangements to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic.
Implementation of the memorandum and disagreements over maritime traffic in the strait disrupted the process, while clashes resumed in July.
