Moscow backs Trump’s assessment of Zelensky
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a news briefing on Friday that Moscow fully agrees with U.S. President Donald Trump’s criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Saying Zelensky does not want to take responsibility or join a peaceful settlement process, Peskov said: “On this issue, we fully share President Trump’s view.”
Trump points to Zelensky’s departure for a ceasefire
In an interview with Newsmax, Trump said he believes a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine will be reached after Zelensky leaves office. Saying Zelensky is not inclined to make a deal, the U.S. president said: “He says he wants to make a deal, but he doesn’t.”

Trump said both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky want an end to the conflict, which has lasted more than four and a half years, but added that he thinks it is harder to negotiate with Zelensky than with Putin.
Control of Donetsk a precondition for a ceasefire
Vladimir Putin continues to insist that Ukraine give up control of the entire Donetsk region as a condition for a ceasefire agreement. Kyiv has repeatedly rejected the demand.

Assessments attributed to sources close to the Kremlin said Putin expects Russian forces to take control of the entire Donetsk region by the end of February 2027.
Support for Kyiv at the Brussels summit
At their summit in Brussels on Friday, European leaders opposed the widening rift between Washington and Kyiv. With winter approaching, the leaders gave Zelensky their unconditional support.
While European officials continue to voice support publicly, they plan in private meetings to ask Zelensky to soften his open criticism of Trump.
