Trade between Germany and Russia fell by approximately 86% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period in 2021, before the war, declining from €27.7 billion to €3.9 billion, according to data from Germany’s Federal Statistical Office.
During this period, Germany’s imports from Russia fell from €15 billion to €500 million, while German exports to Russia declined from €12.7 billion to €3.4 billion.

Before the war, oil and gas accounted for 61.5% of Germany’s imports from Russia. In the first half of 2026, food and animal feed made up the largest share at 38.7%, followed by metals at 31.6% and chemical products at 18%.
The structure of German exports also changed. While machinery and vehicles previously dominated, medical products not subject to European Union restrictions have now taken the leading position.
