The European Union's ban on Russian liquefied natural gas will take effect on January 1, 2027. Because Europe accounts for about half of Russian LNG exports, the decision will require Moscow to redirect its shipments to Asian markets.
China, India, Japan, South Korea, Thailand and the Philippines are among the alternative markets. While transporting Russian LNG to Europe takes 17-20 days, the journey on Asian routes could take 50-80 days.
Redirecting exports to Asia could require a fleet of 45-55 LNG carriers.
