Doctors in Moscow save 42-year-old whose heart stopped repeatedly with ECMO
Doctors at Moscow’s V. M. Buyanov Hospital saved a 42-year-old patient who suffered a massive heart attack and whose heart stopped repeatedly during treatment. The patient received an emergency stent, intensive care and ECMO, and is continuing rehabilitation after receiving the medication needed for the first month from the hospital.
On September 29, doctors at Moscow’s V. M. Buyanov Hospital treated a 42-year-old patient who had suffered a massive heart attack. The patient’s heart stopped repeatedly during treatment.
Anastasia Rakova, Moscow’s deputy mayor, said the city’s emergency care system made it possible to begin treatment during the first hours after the condition developed. Rakova said operations for patients suffering heart attacks were also performed as quickly as possible.
According to Rakova, the patient’s condition became severe because of the massive heart attack. At every stage of treatment, doctors based their decisions on the patient’s health condition.
The patient underwent an emergency stent procedure and was placed in intensive care. The patient’s condition improved after these interventions. However, three days later, the patient suddenly deteriorated and the heart stopped repeatedly.
Doctors immediately began resuscitation efforts. The medical team used an ECMO system, which temporarily takes over some of the functions of the heart and lungs.
The patient is continuing rehabilitation. The hospital also provided the medication the patient will need during the first month of treatment.
