Russian tourists taking home cold medicine bought in Türkiye should check its ingredients first, Turkish security expert and retired police chief Mustafa Begürcü told RIA Novosti.

The concern is pseudoephedrine. According to Begürcü, the substance is found in, among others, Nurofen Cold & Flu tablets, which are popular in Türkiye. Russian tourists can buy such medicines at Turkish pharmacies with a Turkish doctor’s prescription, but he stressed that open sale in Türkiye does not mean free circulation in Russia.
Ephedrine and pseudoephedrine are on List No. 4 of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursors whose circulation is restricted in Russia. According to RIA Novosti, if a medicine contains more than 10% pseudoephedrine, Article 229.1 of Russia’s Criminal Code provides for three to seven years in prison.

Begürcü advises travelers to check a medicine’s active ingredients against Russian rules before flying home and to keep the prescription and pharmacy receipt. A customs officer may accept them as proof that the medicine was bought for treatment, he said, though they do not guarantee clearance.
