A cargo ship traveling from Syria to Russia ran aground in the Dardanelles Strait due to a technical issue. According to a statement from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the San Marino-flagged dry cargo ship 'Pilatus Marine', 190 meters long, suffered an engine failure at the Nara turn area of the strait.
An inspection by divers from the Directorate General of Coastal Safety found no damage to the ship. The rescue operation that followed was successfully concluded and the ship was refloated.
The ministry stated: "The operation, coordinated by our Dardanelles Strait Ship Traffic Services Center, with a pilot captain escort, and the participation of the KIYEM-1 boat and the KURTARMA-16 and KURTARMA-19 tugboats, was successfully completed. After the ship safely completed its strait passage, north-south ship traffic in the Dardanelles was reopened."
Strait traffic, which was disrupted for a while due to the incident, returned to normal after the completion of the rescue efforts. North-south navigation was resumed.
