Türkiye’s Embassy in Kyiv announced that Maryan Mykhailyshyn, caretaker of the Turkish martyrs’ cemeteries in western Ukraine, left his post on Sept. 20 upon reaching the age limit.

For years, Mykhailyshyn looked after the cemeteries in Hutysko, Mechyshchiv, Rohatyn, Pukiv, Lopushnia and Verkhnia Lypytsia, where Turkish soldiers killed on the Galician front in World War I are buried.

The embassy thanked him for his service to Türkiye, saying he cared for the memorials with dedication — at times together with his whole family. The Ottoman army’s XV Corps fought against Russian forces in Galicia in 1916-1917.
