Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Istanbul on October 31 at the invitation of Türkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Türkiye's Minister of National Defense Yaşar Güler welcomed the Ukrainian leader at the airport.
Zelenskyy said he had arrived in Istanbul with his team and would hold important talks with Erdoğan. He said Kyiv was working to strengthen the protection of its citizens, while important issues concerning maritime navigation in the Black Sea were on the agenda.
During the visit, Zelenskyy is also expected to meet with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.
Security in the Black Sea
As Burhanettin Duran, head of the Directorate of Communications of the Presidency of Türkiye, said earlier, the sides will discuss bilateral cooperation, the Russian-Ukrainian war and the security situation in the Black Sea.
In recent months, Russia and Ukraine have increased attacks on vessels in the Black Sea, with vessels flying the Turkish flag also affected. In August, Ankara called for a moratorium on attacks against civilian vessels.
Türkiye as a mediator
In 2022, Türkiye became one of the initiators of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, and in 2025 it hosted three rounds of direct talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul.
