Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the UK detained an oil tanker belonging to Russia’s shadow fleet off its coast. Zelenskiy stressed that this was the first such step taken by the British.
Zelenskiy noted that detentions targeting Russia’s shadow fleet in European waters have increased this year and argued that the flow of oil must be stopped. According to him, the goal is to cut the revenues financing Russia’s war.
The Ukrainian leader announced that starting next week they will discuss legal changes with European partners to allow tankers to be held for longer periods. Zelenskiy said these changes could also include seizing and stopping tankers that provide revenue for the war.
Next week’s diplomacy and defense agenda
Zelenskiy stated that the coming week will be critical and that Ukraine expects concrete results. Air defense, political agreements to strengthen defense in Ukraine, and the opening of a negotiation chapter together with Moldova were also listed among the topics on the agenda.
The Ukrainian leader also noted that some ideas have not yet been made public. He called for everyone to act as effectively and quickly as possible throughout the summer, saying that not a single day or opportunity should be wasted.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer had announced on Sunday morning that British armed forces stopped the oil tanker Smyrtos, which was trying to cross the English Channel and is part of Russia’s shadow fleet. This development drew attention at a time when pressure on Russian oil transportation is increasing in Europe.
