Nikolay Kolomeytsev, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Labor Committee, announced that working grandparents in Russia have the right to take paid leave to care for their grandchildren. Kolomeytsev stated that this right is guaranteed by the Russian Labor Code.
Who is eligible for this right?
Kolomeytsev explained that the leave and allowance are granted not only to working grandmothers and grandfathers, but also to working grandfathers, fathers, and other relatives who are actually caring for the child. However, the monthly care allowance for a child up to one and a half years old can only be received by one person.
What are the payment and duration?
The grandmother or caregiver receives a payment equal to 40% of their average salary until the child reaches one and a half years old. The leave can be extended for up to three years, and the person's job is protected during this period.
What documents are required?
The necessary documents to apply for the leave are:
- An application requesting the leave
- A copy of the child's birth certificate
- Bank account details for the payment
- A document from the employer of the mother and/or father confirming they are not on childcare leave for this child and are not receiving the allowance
- If the mother is unemployed, a document from social protection agencies
Kolomeytsev added that when all conditions are met and the required documents are submitted, the employer is obligated to grant this leave.
