Von der Leyen vows to tighten EU borders over Ceuta migrant surge
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for an immediate halt to dangerous crossings, labelling the images from Ceuta unacceptable. She announced additional support for Spain, including Frontex, and expressed belief that cooperation with Morocco would yield results.
A senior European Union official sharply criticised the mass migration movement from the autonomous city of Ceuta on the Moroccan border. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the images coming from the region were unacceptable.
"We cannot allow anyone to enter the European Union without following our rules," von der Leyen said. The EU leader stressed that dangerous crossings must be halted immediately, human smuggling networks dismantled, and swift returns ensured in line with the rules.
The European Commission President announced that additional operational support, including the EU border agency Frontex, would be provided to Spain. Von der Leyen added that she believed close cooperation with Morocco would produce concrete results.
